No other Austrian ski resorts are open for skiing 365 days of the year (in fact not many on the planet are), making Hintertux something special. Down the road from Mayrhofen and with a quiet village of its own - knock-out views, glacier excursions and stupendously good snow make this a brilliant base in the Zillertal Valley.
Meaning ‘behind Tux’, Hintertux is one of the villages that make up the Tux area – small but swimming in Tyrolean charm. It has its own handful of hotels and guesthouses, with another gaggle of 4* hotels up at the base station (a 10-15-minute walk from the village).
There’s a reason a lot of people opt for the base station over the village – it’s moments from a socking great glacier, where 60km of slopes and glorious views of the Großglockner, Zugspitze and Dolomites await.
Between them, the village and base station have their fair share of places to sleep and eat. If you’re looking for somewhere with more activities and nightlife though, you’re better off staying down the valley in Mayrhofen. One of Austria’s greatest ski towns, it’s just half an hour’s drive away, and the après ski bars and festivals are some of the most famous in the skiing world. Mayrhofen hogged the bulk of the spotlight until Hintertux was used as the filming location for Ed Sheeran's music video 'Perfect', shooting this resort to international stardom.
Others choose to stay somewhere in between – the villages of Finkenberg and Tux aren’t quite as quiet as Hintertux, but hold onto that traditional, cosy feel that the Austrian alps are loved for.
Wherever you decide to stay, the Hintertux glacier and wider Zillertal 3000 area are yours to roam. Innsbruck’s the nearest airport, about 90km or 1.5 hours away, while train travellers can stop at Mayrhofen then make the final 19km leg of the journey via bus or car.

The restaurant offering on the Hintertux Glacier is varied. You will find alpine coziness and an impressive panorama at over 3000 m in the Gletscherhütte. At the Spannagelhaus, you will be served alpine cuisine in a modern atmosphere. The Tuxer-Fernerhaus is the "centre" of the ski resort and features a wait-staffed restaurant as well as a self-service area - there is something for everyone here.
Starting from the top (altitude-wise) at 2660m, Tuxer Fernerhaus has a self-service and a la carte restaurant for both those who want to grab and go and those who want to sit and be served. Wrap your fingers around a Glühwein by the fireplace or head out to the panorama bar’s sun terrace and drink in the views from a deckchair. Spannagelhaus at 2351m has a glorious outdoor seating area, where Kaiserschmarrn (Austrian pancakes) are a must-try. Further down at 2100m, the Sommerberg Arena’s a good spot for après ski, with a DJ and party atmosphere. For a livelier après atmosphere, spend an afternoon in Mayrhofen which is home to the legendary Scotland Yard Pub and Bruck n’ Stadl bar.
There are some truly unique activities in this neck of the woods – head inside the glacier to ‘Nature’s Ice Palace’ from the Gletscherbus 3 top station to see ice stalactites and frozen waterfalls. The Spannagel Cave’s the highest publically-reachable cave on the continent and the biggest mountain cave system in the Central Alps – well worth touring.
There are supermarkets and specialist food shops, a chemist, post office and so on but retail therapy is confined to sports and souvenir shops. If you are very keen to shop, Mayrhofen has many a good selection of retail outlets and Innsbruck is a beautiful, medieval town with a wide range of interesting boutiques and large department stores.
