This small, authentic Tyrolean town is hidden right in the midst of the Schneewinkel ski area. It’s in easy reach of the other resorts in the area (St Johann, Kirchdorf, Erpfendorf, Oberndorf, Waidring) via the free ski bus as well as being just an hour’s drive from the well-connected Salzburg airport. The village’s relatively low altitude encourages the growth of trees close to the village, which gives the whole area a cosy and intimate feel year round.

The village retains much of its traditional charm, which is embodied by the imposing thirteenth century church. It’s rumoured that Napoleon was once a visitor, though what he would have thought about the latest craze sweeping the region- snowkiting- is quite beyond us.

The local ski area has over 40km of pistes and despite the village lying at only 800m, there is an impressive 1200m of vertical on offer. The marked runs cater well for beginners and intermediates with some fantastic gladed runs, though the more advanced will be thrilled by the freeriding potential of the resort- it is one of the regular stops on the Freeride World Tour. The lift system is agreeably reliable and modern, and with Fieberbrunn still being a relatively underrated resort you won’t be spending much time in lift lines.

If you’re skiing in Fieberbrunn for longer than three days, your local pass is automatically upgraded to one that covers the entire Schneewinkel ski area- around 170km of piste and more than fifty lifts. If this isn’t enough, you can upgrade to the Kitzbüheler Super Ski card- you’ll have access to 1000 km of slopes over 10 local ski areas, stretching from Alpbachtal all the way to Kaprun.

What is Fieberbrunn like for Beginner skiers?

The local ski area offers something for skiers of all abilities. Once you’ve got to grips with the T-bars, the Streuboeden area has some lovely gentle blues to get the ski legs back on - in particular run 2, which winds its way all the way down into the village. The Ski Schule Fieberbrunn has been running for over 70 years, so if you need any lessons over the week, they certainly know their stuff.

What is Fieberbrunn like for Intermediate skiers?

In the Henne area- skiers far right of the resort- intermediates will find some great red runs that are definitely worth a few laps, and there’s plenty of scope for nipping off to the side of the runs for a little adventure. The area is well serviced by the Reckmoos-Sud 8-person gondola, so on stormy days you’ll be nice and cosy on your ride up.

The experts amongst you will be pleased to know that locals regard Fieberbrunn as having some of the best freeriding in the whole of the Kitz Alps. The fact that Fieberbrunn is currently the only Austrian stop on the Freeride world tour tells you all you need to know about the potential of the area.

What is Fieberbrunn like for snowboarding?

There’s a modest snowpark in the centre of the resort, though if you’re after something a bit more challenging, the surrounding area has more to offer- the Qpark Funpark in St Johann has some good features, and slightly further afield the snowpark on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is a treat year-round.

Fieberbrunn Restaurants

Considering its relatively modest size, Fieberbrunn has a great range of restaurants and bars, most of them offering a selection of traditional and international dishes. La Pampa is a great little Mexican restaurant, though be warned- outside of the high season it is only open Thurs- Sun and is usually heaving as a result. The restaurant has a diverse menu- weather permitting the barbeque food is fantastic- and the après kicks off at three each day. With special events and drinks specials most days (don’t miss the fondue night or white sausage breakfast) you’ll find yourself wondering why you need to ever leave. When dining on the mountain, the Enzianhutte is open from nine, and on blue bird days its sun terrace is the best place to relax with a drink. The Streuboden Alm is a safe choice for anyone travelling with fussy eaters, with pizzas and chicken dishes the order of the day.

Where to eat in Fieberbrunn and on the mountain

Streuböden Alm Located at the mid station of the Streuboeden lift, you’ll find some great food, friendly staff and an inviting atmosphere. With its delightful rustic façade and generous portions it’s easy to see why the Streuböden is a firm favourite of guests and locals alike.

Fieberbrunn Après Ski

It’s easy to let the S4 Alm bar and restaurant turn into a one stop shop for all your après ski activities. Right at the base of three of the valley lifts, you can ski straight to the door. Fieberbrunn's après-ski scene is best described as cosy. While the village is quiet, après-ski can be found on the slopes at the S4 Alm or the Biwak, and sometimes the Enzianhütte. For more après-ski options, consider the other Skicircus villages - Saalbach and Hinterglemm both have a reputation for their après-ski scenes.

Bars Late Night Clubs and Cafes in Fieberbrunn

BIWAK bar With an incredible location right at the base of the lifts, there’s nowhere better to start your après. Although often the first port of call from the slopes, with the late night DJs, dancing on tables and regular drinks specials it’s easy to get carried away and not leave until the early hours.

Fieberbrunn Activites for Non-skiers

There’s more to the town than bars and restaurants and there is plenty to do off the slopes. Families should have great fun on the floodlit toboggan run, and the romantics amongst you will be sorely tempted to take a sleigh ride around the village. If you have the time, head to nearby St. Johann and visit the brilliant Panoramabad leisure centre. With saunas, spas, pools and waterslides it’s sure to be a distracting diversion for the whole family.

Fun Connection With the biggest range of activities in the valley, everyone will have a great time with Fun Connection. With high ropes courses, canyoning, archery and rafting to name but a few of the activities on offer, the experienced instructors will ensure you have a day to remember.

Best Time to Visit Fieberbrunn

Although the village itself sits at 800m above sea level, there is an impressive 1200m of skiable vertical on offer, and with mainly north facing slopes, the snow tends to stick around. The snow making facilities are reasonable- 30 canons for 45km of pistes- but its biggest draw is its secluded location. Fewer visitors than the neighbouring resorts leave the snow in better conditions for longer, and with some great freeriding around the slopes you’ll usually be able to find a decent stash of the fresh stuff. Week long passes cover the whole of the Schneewinkel area, and upgrading to the Kitzbüheler Super Ski card gives you access to over 1000km of slopes, including the Kitzsteinhorn glacier- if you can’t find some snow there, you’re frankly not trying hard enough! When the sun’s shining later on in the season and you’ve skied the morning away, head to one of the mountain restaurants and spend the afternoon basking with a drink whilst enjoying the amazing scenery and working on your tan.

There’s heaps in Fieberbrunn for families, and if you’re looking for a holiday destination that’s off the beaten track then this could be the resort for you. Kids of all ages will love racing each other down the Speed and Racing runs where they’ll have their best efforts timed and recorded, and with Skiline they can track their progress over the hill for the day- it’s sure to get the competitive spirit flowing freely! The ‘Easy Park’ is the perfect place for the freestyle stars of tomorrow to practice their first jumps and tricks, and some of the features are approachable enough to even tempt Mum and Dad!

No one’s going to be getting bored away from the slopes either. The Timoks coaster (a single cart rollercoaster) is now open year round, so if you’re in need of another adrenaline kick after skiing then it’ll be just the ticket. It’s up to you how fast you hurtle down the kilometre long track and the loops and banked corners are sure to get your heart racing!

Fieberbrunn is still considered to be more affordable than many of the more well-known Austrian resorts, which makes eating out with the kids much more appealing. Take the whole brood for an early dinner at the S4 Alm- the kids will love the pizza menu, and we’re sure that you parents will deserve a Glühwein after a long days skiing with the kids!

For those with some energy left at the end of the day (or if you fancy a warm rest day off the slopes), the Panoramabad leisure centre just around the corner in St Johann is worth a visit. Relax in the sauna after a few games of tennis, though a few laps of the ice rink will seem a bit more in keeping with the general holiday!

If you don’t fancy the thought of flying with the kids then look into one of our self-drive holidays- with some video games and an iPod the journey will fly by! To get to the slopes as soon as possible pick a package that includes flights and transfers- a half or full board option will ensure everything is taken care of before you arrive.

Fieberbrunn will make a great base for your group ski trip this year- if the variety in the resort isn’t enough, you can easily access a whole range of local resorts that are included on your ski pass.

In terms of the skiing, most of the runs around Fieberbrunn are red or blue- beginners and intermediates will have no problem with the majority. The Henne area of the mountain is steeper, and home to the more extreme runs, but Fieberbrunn really comes into its own in terms of the freeriding potential around the resort. It’s currently the only Austrian resort that hosts a leg of the Freeride World Tour, and a few minutes hike from some of the higher lifts will give you access to some of the same terrain that can challenge even the pro’s. There’s also ample scope for splitting up for the day’s skiing. With so many resorts covered by the Schneewinkel pass, everyone will be able to find a favourite! Any beginners can get to grips with the snow on the mild slopes over at Kirchdorf or Erpfendorf, intermediates will enjoy the variety at St Johann, and freestylers will have a ball at the Qpark snowpark in Waidring.

After a day on the slopes it’s easy to keep everyone entertained as well. Stay in one of our great half board hotels and dinner will be taken care of for you. Though if you’re not eating in a hotel, head to La Pampa for a Mexican feast- be sure to wash it down with a few coronas though. The BIWAK iglu bar is the first port of call straight from the slopes- the ideal location to swap stories about the day’s events over a few cold pitchers.
