2 star hotels are categorized as 'tourist' and 'standard' hotels in Europe. The classifications vary from country to country, but you can generally expect the bare necessities – bed, bath/shower – without any of the frills. When it comes to apartments, these won't be the most plush or roomy in the Alps – though if you just need somewhere cheap to crash after skiing and après, they could be just the ticket.

There's no official chalet star rating system, but those with a couple of stars tend to be simple but comfy lodges – probably not with ensuite Jacuzzi baths, but still a cosy place to stay with a host to do the housework. Staying somewhere with 2 stars needn't mean you have to compromise on location; many of our cheaper lodgings still have super positions in the centre of resort or near the ski lifts and slopes.
