Family Chalet Catering

Catering in a chalet of any description usually includes buffet breakfasts, afternoon cake and optional suppers for young children an hour or so before a meal for grownups, a formula which has kept skiers happy for decades.

As you’re all under the same roof, you can put tired tykes to bed and head down for dinner knowing they’re only meters away. In bigger chalets and chalets hotels you may even find free baby listening and patrol services, or kids’ film evenings, allowing you to enjoy complete peace of mind with the local vintage.

Most chalets give hosts an evening off each week, so you’ll need to arrange one of your dinners – but your host should be able to set you on the trail of the best pizza or family fondue in town and book a table for you if you give them enough notice. When you want to get out and about, grown-ups only, there are many family chalets and chalet hotels with childcare on site or nearby, and several resorts have nannies who can come to you.

For the rest of the week, essentials like cots, changing mats, high chairs, games and DVD players are usually available, sometimes for a small extra fee, plus, you’re often free to use all the facilities in a chalet kitchen. Many even have childcare stations with facilities to aid parents, including microwaves, sterilizers, kettles and fridges.

Equipment in Luxury family chalets

Most properties can provide trappings like high chairs, bed guards and baby monitors on request and lots of chalets have their own toboggans, iPads and DVD's. Often baby products like nappies can be pre-ordered for your arrival. If your sprogs are skiing, staff can usually arrange in-chalet ski fittings and some even provide contact wristbands for peace of mind when munchkins are out on the mountains.

Ski School and Childcare in Luxury family chalets

Staff will be able to point you in the direction of the resort's finest ski schools and can often lend a hand with drop offs and collections. Private nannies can also be arranged through the chalet or a recommended company - arriving with an armful of fun and games, they'll watch over littles in the comfort of your chalet while you're out making the most of the mountain. See our ski chalets with childcare here.

Mealtimes in Luxury family chalets

Chalet chefs will dish up exciting, healthy menus according to your whims, and will happily whip up mini meals and daily baby purees. Mealtimes can usually be flexible, depending on what works best for you - whether it's early sittings for children to everyone dining together. While most menu's feature the finest haute cuisine, a good sandwich in front of the TV shouldn't be a problem either.

Luxury family chalet locations

Ski in, ski out chalets are an asset when there are little legs in tow, especially when (as in Elephant Blanc) the nearest run's an easy going blue. There's no traipsing about with equipment and you can nip back for a snack or hot drink at any time. Not to worry if your chalet's a bit further from the piste: most places come with shuttle services of private chauffeurs, who'll whisk you to and fro whenever suits you best.

Luxury family chalet facilities

Cosying up for a film night's a delightful way to end the day - all the more special in a chalet with its own cinema. Look out for properties that have upped their game with pool tables and the latest consoles, some even their own swimming pools and hot tubs. Tadpoles go mad for the pools in Elephant Blanc, Chalet Montana and Mont Blanc and for peace of mind, access doors can be locked to keep them out of harm's way.

Booking chalets to stay with children

Besides the fact that a chalet holiday's a rite of passage for any young slope goer, hosts, hearty meals and homely living rooms instantly put all at ease, so everyone can get on with the top priority – having a good time...

If a chalet isn’t a specified “family-only” or “child-friendly” property, booking for “sole occupancy” is another way round a standard no-child policy and makes you master of meal times, sleeping arrangements and the hour it’s off to bed. Narrowing your search to smaller properties sleeping 6, 8 or 10 means this doesn’t have to cost a king’s ransom.

Our favourite option, though, is joining forces with friends who have their own children to book a whopper for sole occupancy. Kiddos can roam to their heart’s content, costs of childcare and private lessons can be divided and conquered and when the tykes are tucked up in bed, you’ll have more boozy fireside evenings than in the average year at home.
