Highlights: • Close to Innsbruck and Salzburg • Home to World Masters Cycling Championships • 200km of walking and cycling routes
There are lots of famous ‘must hikes’ when it comes to St Johann. The Horn panorama circuit from Harschbichl does what it says on the tin, with awesome views from the Kitzbüheler Horn. We love the routes around Grießbach Gorg, which are pretty forgiving, making them excellent for family hikes. To clock up some serious mileage, the Adlerweg / Eagle's Walk is the longest hiking path on the continent and takes you all the way from St Johann to St Anton. If you don’t fancy the long haul, the first bit is worth doing anyway as it takes you to the spectacular Schleier waterfall. The Moor & More area will keep families happy for hours, with discovery tours, guided hikes and lots of opportunity to see flora and fauna along the way. In between walks, littl’un’s will love splashing about in the river as well as the wooden play area, while things like monkey swings, rope climbing and caves will keep older children entertained.
There are more than 200km of road cycling and MTB trails in the area. The chocolate-box village is nestled at the foot of the imposing Kitzbuheler Horn, which is home to the steepest road in Austria – kudos to anyone who cycles all 1337 vertical metres to the top without stopping... For something less punishing, head north along the banks of the meandering Waldbach River and before long you’ll be in Germany...
There are a number of mountain bike routes to Harschbichl, mostly medium difficulty and taking a couple of hours, with some good pit stops along the way. One of our favourite easy bike rides is a 9.5km loop called the ‘Hinterkaiserrunde’ that takes you over dirt tracks, meadows, forest trails and a roman road.
If you love being on two wheels but want to take it easy, you’re in the right place – this is part of the world’s biggest E-Bike region. A thousand kilometres of paths are at your battery-powered handlebars and St Johann itself has 2 charging stations at the Infobüro and Gasthof Römerhof.
