Highlights: • 650km walking, hiking & via ferrata • 570km cycling paths • Laid back, traditional village
The Wetterstein mountain range is brimming with more than 650km of marked footpaths. The Culture Trail is a great way to see the mountains, old buildings and the Karwendel railway, while you learn about the history of the region. One of our favourite hikes is the one that leads over the Ankerschlag and up to Eppzirleralm – it’s pretty long but there are some fantastic views as a reward. If you do find yourself flagging, pop into one of the mountain huts, serving Alpine specialities to hungry hikers (there are roughly 60 in the area). Nordic Walking is massively popular here, with a 266km network of trails devoted to the sport. It’s all well sign-posted and divided into three levels of difficulty, catering for novices and veterans alike.
Seefeld is perfectly located for some epic road rides. If you’re feeling fit, take on the gruelling but beautiful Karwendel Tour route that passes through Innsbruck and Schwaz before it heads north into fairytale Bavaria (Germany) and loops back around to Seefeld.
The 500km of bike tracks laced through the area range from intense lift-accessed downhills to spectacular long-distance cross-country. One of the best rides combines trails 11, 84 and 211 and takes in a punishing climb to the Nordlinger Huette rest stop at 2239 metres, before sending you hurtling back down through the forest towards town.
If you want to take things easy but still enjoy the ride, hire one of the 100 Movelo E-Bikes in the area, which let you do the same routes but with less effort (just remember to swap the battery at one of the 10 stations in the area to keep powered-up).
