Highlights: • KaiserWorld Scheffau for children • World’s biggest E-bike region • Climbing at Multerkarwand
Extensive hiking paths lead through dense mountain woods, Sound of Music-esque alpine meadows and deserted, lunar-like scree fields. On the other side of the valley, the Bergbahn gondola provides the easy way up the Brandstadl to the KaiserWelt, another serene forest. The region is famed for the hut to hut walks, 50km of which stretch out across the slopes. The most famous of these is the Tiroler Adlerweg (Eagle trail), the first three stages of which pass through the Kaiser mountains. For an equally tough adventure, try one of the regular Nordic walking tours which begin at the Scheffau tourist office. For ramblers, the Panorama route from the Hartkaiser in Ellmau to the Hexenwasser in Söll provides a gentler way to experience stunning views of the mountains.
The Kitzbuheler-Alpen-Kaisergebirge is the largest E-Biking region in the world. Electric bikes are a more relaxing way of getting around the 800km of trails, which range from gentle cycling low in the valleys to technical downhill singletrack on the steeper parts of the mountains.
Six MTB tours come down the slopes but the highlight has to be the Hopfgarten Downhill bike park: 3km of breakneck descent, dropping roughly 600m overall, over gnarly roots and some hectic jumps.
For road biking, the stretch of the Lammer River between Oberscheffau and Golling is one of prettiest routes in the area. The 6.5km flat path is a real favourite and it swerves past the Lammer Gorge and the Lake Harrberg recreational area.
