Highlights: • Tranquil atmosphere • 300km of walking trails • Kundl gorge train
The green pastures of the Wildschönau Valley are latticed with some of Austria’s most scenic walking paths. We love the shady routes through the pines at the north of the village and the tour of Kundl Gorge is truly impressive. Markbachjoch Mountain – easily accessed from the main gondola - has a sculpture park at its summit for you to wander through. You’ll find plenty of gentle Alpine trails here as well, including route 2 to Käsealm. There’s a lot of scope for more challenging hikes... take the Markbachjoch lift for some incredible routes onto the Rosskopf Mountain or hike to the top of the Feldalphorn. Families will love the woodland walk to Thierbach, where there’s a forest playground for little ones. To introduce you to the ‘wild and beautiful’ valley, the tourist office do guided walks throughout the week (usually free if you have the Wildschönau card) with different grades of difficulty from easy to demanding.
The gentle, rolling terrain of the Wildschönau Valley is absolutely perfect if you’re after scenic bike rides. Starting from Niederau, head north up the Sonnhang Weg and take on the hairpins in the forest until you get to the Bruggberg. Loads of these forest roads are great for cycling – or you could drop down into the valley to get some distance on the flat main roads. If you want to take to the mountains, you’ll find several routes worth following - there’s a challenging 14km loop tour that takes you through Mosalm and Worgl before returning back to base or an easier 7.1km route to Worglerboden. The local area makes up stage 12 and 13 of the Tyrol Bike Safari – 12 is a challenging stretch including steep sections and S bends on the way down to Inneralpbach from Hornboden. Stage 13 covers 3000 meters of vertical descent and 1000m of vertical rise, with the rest of the ascent covered by lifts and gondolas.
Make light work of uphill stretches by opting for an E–Bike, which you can rent from local shops like Sport Blachfelder. Wildschönau is part of the world’s biggest E-Bike network, which has a total of 59 charging points, so there’s no shortage of pit stops if you want to head out and explore the Kitzbühel Alps.
