There are lots of benefits of Riva being a large Italian town (the second biggest on the lake) if you’re planning a holiday in October.

If you’re looking for a summer holiday in a traditionally warm climate, its best to visit Riva del Garda in the temperate months of May and September, or the warmest months of June, July and August but, if warm weather is not on your perfect-holiday tick-list, read on.

October is a much quieter time of year in terms of tourism on the lake, which can make some of the small destinations seem too quiet but being a large and very much lived in town, Riva retains a great atmosphere all year round. Having waved goodbye to the summer crowds, you can enjoy Riva at your own pace in October.

Another benefit of Riva’s size and population is that there’s something to do here in all weather, so if you’re caught in a cold or rainy spell you’ll find a range of indoor things to do. The oldest town on the lake, Riva has some lovely historical buildings including the Rocca which hosts the Civic Museum and Picture Gallery as well as churches well worth a visit such as the Inviolata. It also has what’s widely thought to be the best shopping on the lake and a fantastic array of bars, cafes and restaurants.

Since you won’t be lazing about in the sunshine at this time of year, a great way to enjoy the cooler atmosphere is through fresh air and exercise on Riva’s variety of cycling and walking terrain. Whether you’re conquering new heights up the mountains, ambling along the promenade, enjoying the view once you’ve reached Il Bastione or discovering the amazing Parco Grotta Cascata Varone, there’s enough of opportunity to keep everyone busy.

Riva is particularly buzzing in October when the International Lake Garda Marathon takes place and there are some great food and mountain biking events over in nearby Limone. An international choir competition and music festival also takes place here every other year with daytime and evening concerts, making October a fantastic time to book your holiday.

We love the fact that Riva has something happening for everyone any time of year and whatever the weather, but if somewhere smaller and quieter would suit you, try Maderno or Torri or for warmer weather here in Riva, come before the autumn.
