For a hive of activity in May, it’s hard to top Riva del Garda. A proper Italian town with something to do in all weather, Riva hosts various sailing regattas which provide a buzzing atmosphere and lots to see. Regattas in May including the European championships, Eurosaf Champions Sailing Cup and the Riva Cup. Riva usually hosts Bike festivals in May too, including the Sympatex Bike Festival and the Bike festival Garda Trentino.
As the northernmost town of Lake Garda, Riva has a milder, breezier climate than other resorts. This means it’s great if you like an active holiday where you can do walking, hiking and mountain biking without struggling in the heat or humidity. There are some great walking routes (the walk to The Bastion is a popular one) and mountain biking trails here and, because of the wind, Riva is popular for sailing and windsurfing. You don’t have to be a sporty type to enjoy Riva, which has beautiful scenery, renaissance churches and great shopping. In fact its probably true to say that Riva is the most cosmopolitan town on the lake.
Riva’s breezy climate is lovely and refreshing on hikes and makes it brilliant for water sports but it’s not our first choice in May if you like to lie back and soak up the rays. For a warmer Lake Garda resort in May, head south to Desenzano or Peschiera which are more sheltered from the winds. We love the fact that there’s always something going on in Riva, however if you’re looking for a quieter resort, visit Gardone Riviera or Maderno.
