The great thing about Lake Garda is that you won’t find it deserted outside the tourist season – there’s a lot on in October from sports events to food festivals adding a great buzz to the atmosphere. Sporting events include the annual Marathon which starts in Limone, goes through Riva and Torbole and finishes in Malcesine and Bike X-Treme, an international mountain biking competition in Limone. Stay in Bardolino (or nearby in Garda) for the famous grape and wine festival, which celebrates the grape harvest with wine tasting, food stalls, music and fireworks or enjoy honey from all over Italy at the Honey Festival in Lazise.

If your priority is relaxing, the southern towns are much quieter at this time of year and also get the best autumn sunshine. For day trips, Peschiera and Desenzano have their own train stations, offering easy access to Venice, Verona and Milan, but you can visit these historic centres from any of the towns around the lake.

As well as providing the perfect excuse for some pampering in Sirmione’s thermal springs, October’s cool temperatures are great for active holidays around Lake Garda. You’ll find heaps of walking and cycling terrain in Maderno and Torri from challenging mountain trails to gentle routes through vineyards and villages. October’s odd rainy spells are a brilliant excuse to duck into the religious buildings, museums and shops around the lake (Salò and Desenzano are fantastic for this).

While you’re not likely to find yourself sunbathing around Lake Garda in October, you will find some terrific holiday deals, because many people don’t think of taking a holiday in October. If you’re going for the history, scenery and culture, rather than the mid-summer sunshine, many would argue that the smart traveller will get the most out of the low season month of October, or perhaps get the best of both worlds in the early and late-season months of May or September.
