One of Lake Garda’s proper towns, Salò is brilliant for October holidays as it holds on to that bustling Italian-town atmosphere while smaller, more tourist-focussed resorts are a lot quieter outside the summer season.
If you’re looking for a summer holiday in a traditionally warm climate, its best to visit Salo in the temperate months of May and September, or the warmest months of June, July and August but, if warm weather is not on your perfect-holiday tick-list, read on.
Average temperatures in Salò in October go up to 18°C, so expect mild weather with possible rainy spells that’s much nicer than the weather you’ll leave at home. October’s cooler climate is great if you want to enjoy mountain biking or hiking around the Parco Alto Garda Bresciano without the heat and humidity that you’d have to contend with in the summer months.
While it does rain in October, this can be a blessing in disguise if you take the time to visit Salò’s various indoor attractions. Salò’s cathedral is lovely to wander around as well as the palazzos (particularly Fantoni where you’ll find the Nastro Azzurro Museum). Salò also has an impressive range of shops – start off at the Piazza Dal Vittoria by the promenade and has good transport links to other resorts around the lake, particularly Gardone Riviera which is only a 5 minute drive away.
If you’re staying in Salo in October, head over to east side of the lake to Bardolino for the annual grape and wine festival which is one of the biggest events on the Lake Garda Calendar. The International Lake Garda Marathon also goes through the towns on the north end of the lake during October.
