If your holiday isn’t restricted by school term dates and you want to avoid the crowds and hot weather of the summer months, September is a fantastic time to stay in Garda town. A fantastic Lake Garda resort all round, a September holiday in Garda offers a combination of history, outdoor activities and simply enjoying the sunny surroundings. The best thing about this town is how central it is on the lake, making it the perfect base to explore Lake Garda as a whole.
With cooler temperatures compared to the summer months, September is a brilliant time to book an active holiday in Garda. There are some brilliant scenic walks and bike rides: go up between the hills to Albarè in Costermano or for rock climbing, travel 5km to Marciaga. For a gentle walk in the sunshine, walk south along the promenade to Bardolino. Activities on the lake can also be enjoyed best here in September, when the water is warmer and the sun less intense – learn or improve your sailing at the sailing club.
As well as plenty of activities, you can enjoy more leisurely paced days in Garda, sitting in the sun at the little harbour or on the promenade. Garda only has around 9 days which have any rainfall in all of September and these short rainy spells are the perfect excuse to sit in one of the gelaterias and cafes along or visit the Palazzo del Capitano and the Villa Albertini. Garda has perhaps the best access to other towns on the lake including tourist favourites Bardolino and Torri del Benaco.
Evenings in September are warm – dine al fresco on the lakeside or sample Garda’s lively nightlife.
If you’re staying in Garda at the end of September while the Bardolino wine festival is going on, it’s well worth walking down the promenade or driving over to experience the annual wine festival where, besides the delicious food and wine you’ll usually enjoy live music and a firework display.
The great thing about Garda is that there’s something for everyone. If you’d like to visit somewhere sports-focussed, have a look at Torbole or for history and culture, try Gardone Riviera or Malcesine.
