Highlights: • 1000+km hiking trails • 750km cycling and biking trails • Watersports on Lake Schwarzsee
With over a thousand kilometres at your feet, including 170km of marked trails for Nordic walking, you could have a walking holiday in Kitzbühel year after year and keep finding new places. The trademark medieval streets make the town alone a beautiful place to explore and the riverside trail along the Kitzbühel Ache is lovely for an easy jaunt – we like taking it northwards for coffee and cake in one of St. Johann’s famed cafes, though Salzburg’s soon reached if you head south. There’s a nice 25 minute ramble to the shores of Lake Schwarzsee, as well as a number of Nordic Walking trails over the surrounding peaks. Roam the wide, sloping meadows of the grass covered mountains – there’s a nice and easy hike to the chapel of St. Bernard, which takes you on the legendary Hahnenkamm. To up the ante, tackle Austria’s steepest mountain road on the Horn (if the gradient doesn’t do the trick, the views will definitely take your breath away...).
This area is prime road biking territory, which is why the Tour of Austria passes through nearly every year. You’ll find lots to get stuck into - the notorious Kitzbueheler Horn should be at the top of every serious cyclist’s to-do list, it’s the steepest road in Austria.
Looking at the landscape and trail network, we’d forgive you for thinking the mountain biking is too good to be true. There’s some amazing natural singletrack and if you can’t face the thought of pedalling up all those mountains, a number of gondolas will do the work for you. The Ehrenbach Freeride Trail is a must; a great riverside descent thorough the forest studded with natural jumps and berms.
All this excitement isn’t only open to the super fit – Kitz is part of the biggest E-Bike region on the planet and you’ll find 9 places to hire and 4 places to charge in the local area.
