Highlights: • 200km of walking trails • Live music and festivals • Stunning mountain scenery
With access to a massive range of walking routes, including the 350km Almenweg trail, Filzmoos has plenty to discover on its own back door. Stage 28 of the Almenweg stretches from the resort around the Rettenstein slopes. A beautiful route for confident hikers, it’s got its fair share of Alpine flowers and the occasional marmot can be spotted around the path. Nearby in Dachstein, the loop trail is also a top spot for 360° views of Salzburg’s epic landscape. The Hammerbach river walk through Filzmoos is great for a quick trip out – if you have kids in tow, take them on Moosalm’s animal’s hut trek. The nature trail over the Bachalm is lovely too, while the longer Hofalm hike over to Oberhofalm includes a rest stop at the Almsee before you hop on the bus back.
Filzmoos is at the centre of some really diverse cycling routes that guide you through spectacular alpine landscapes. The Hofalm Round is a fantastic 13km tour from the resort to the lake at Oberhofalm. It’s wonderfully gentle and mostly covers paved road aside from occasional gravelly patches. Slightly more testing is the Mandling circuit which finishes with a steep stretch through gravel. Surely up there with Austria’s most intense routes is the Filzmoos-Turlwandhutte-Bachalm loop. Only suitable for good mountain bikes, it’s a 24-mile trek across tarmac, gravel roads and rocky trails with magnificent panoramas of the Dachstein Massif.
If you find the trails a bit intimidating – or simply prefer less legwork – hire an E-Bike where you pedal like on any normal bike but with battery power to back you up on the testing climbs.
