Highlights: • Stunning location • Perfect for walking • Laid back atmosphere
Full of easy-going trails over rolling pastures and blossoming meadows, Ellmau’s a terrific place to don your walking boots and head out into the Wilder Kaiser. The Steinkreis tour weaves you through shaded forests to Ellmau’s impressive stone circle, while there’s loads of wildlife to spot on the moors. Going barefoot’s a little unorthodox but the bubbling stream and massage stones of the trail at Hexenwasser are great fun – not to mention a relief for aching soles...
The Rübezahl path is great for a family hike, with some weird and wonderful carved figures along its 3km stretch. See if the Oberhofer family are still doing llama treks from The Koglerhof if you fancy a walk accompanied by a four-legged friend. Seasoned hikers can do the challenging hike to the top of Hintere Goinger Halt (the steepest bits have fixed cables) – start off at the Wochenbrunneralm which you can drive to in less than ten minutes.
Cross country riders will be in their element in Ellmau, with its mile-upon-mile of tight, twisting natural singletrack and punishing climbs. The journeys down make the climbs worthwhile – it’s not uncommon to descend over 15,000 feet in one day here...
It isn’t all hard work either; there are a number of gondolas for those who prefer their riding lift-assisted and Leogang’s famous downhill bike park is less than an hour’s drive away. On top of that, Ellmau is in the Wilder Kaiser region and part of the largest E-bike zone in the world. The area encompasses nine tourist regions (45 villages) interlinked by cycle paths that are tucked away from main roads. These paths can also be accessed by road bikes, doubling up as a readymade network for touring or day rides.
