What a week it’s been in the Alps – cracking snow cover from last week’s dumps, low temperatures keeping it cool and glorious blue skies and sunshine over the past couple of days. The sun terraces are buzzing, and the views are nothing short of staggering.
It looks like the weekend’s going to be a sunny one in most parts, with more snow to come in the middle of next week. After which, most forecasts are predicting another bluebird Friday. All in all, it looks like we’ve got a glorious Easter to come.
Here’s what 12 of our favourite resorts looked like today:
Alpe d’Huez, France
Temperature: -14°C to -6°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 310cm
Snow in resort: 170cm
Current weather: Superbly sunny – both in resort, and up on the Pic Blanc at 3300m. Snow quality on the mountain is fresh thanks to a recent dusting. It’s due to be a sunny weekend, with light snow on Saturday and heavier falls over the following days.
Cervinia & Zermatt, Italy & Switzerland
Temperature: -4°C to 7°C (Cervinia) -11°C to -1°C (Zermatt)
Snow @ top of ski area: 220cm
Snow in resort: 85cm (Cervinia) 50cm (Zermatt)
Current weather: The Cervinia-Zermatt ski area is wonderfully sunny today, with SNO lovers enjoying powder snow up on the hills. A little cloud is expected tomorrow and then snow, snow, snow for the next few days.
Courchevel, France
Temperature: -8°C to -1°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 200cm
Snow in resort: 153cm
Current weather: Sunny and fair, with the freezing point hovering around the 1000m mark. There should be some dustings of snow over the weekend – and heavy snowfalls on Wednesday.
La Plagne, France
Temperature: -8°C to -7°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 290cm
Snow in resort: 170cm
Current weather: A mix of sun and cloud today and this weekend, with a decent dump of snow due in the middle of next week.
Val d’Isere, France
Temperature: -4°C to -2°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 280cm
Snow in resort: 160cm
Current weather: Sunny with the odd wispy cloud higher up. A few more clouds are expected to be appearing from Haute Maurienne tomorrow, bringing a few snowflakes with them. More snow from Sunday, with heavy falls on Wednesday.
Lech & Zurs, Austria
Temperature: -7°C to 1°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 220cm
Snow in resort: 125cm
Current weather: Sunny today and more sunshine over the weekend. Clouds coming in on Monday, with snow due on Tuesday.
Les 2 Alpes, France
Temperature: -10°C to -2°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 180cm
Snow in resort: 40cm
Current weather: Cloud and sun today and tomorrow, with cloud and snow taking over from Sunday.
Les Arcs, France
Temperature: -9°C to 3°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 297cm
Snow in resort: 132cm
Current weather: Sunny, with the freezing level at about 1500m. The weather man’s predicting sun and cloud for the next few days, with snow due higher up on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meribel, France
Temperature: -4°C to 7°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 102cm
Snow in resort: 210cm
Current weather: Wall to wall sunshine today, a little more cloud should appear over the weekend and into next week, with temperatures hovering around -7 and 4 in resort, and -7 and -11 up top.
Verbier, Switzerland
Temperature: -6°C to 2°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 260cm
Snow in resort: 43cm
Current weather: A sunny Friday, followed by a mix of sun and cloud up to Monday, then snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tignes, France
Temperature: -9°C to 0°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 312cm
Snow in resort: 165cm
Current weather: Sun + cloud today and tomorrow, with temperatures dropping on Sunday. Next week looks like it’ll be snowing every day, with Wednesday expecting the heaviest falls. Then it’s expected to be another Friday of sun-drenched skiing.
Val Thorens, France
Temperature: -8°C to 3°C
Snow @ top of ski area: 300cm
Snow in resort: 185cm
Current weather: The freezing point’s around 1200m and it’s partly sunny, partly cloudy… Up until Tuesday when there’s snow, followed by even more of the white stuff on Wednesday.
