Chinese NY: Chamonix & the year of the Monkey
It’s Chinese New Year – the Universe is speaking to us again! While 2015’s Chinese New Year led us to Zermatt, this time round it’s the Year of the Monkey – and it’s all about Chamonix.
8 reasons why you must ski Chamonix if you were born in the year of the monkey, or if you’re skiing this year.
1. Local businesses are dedicated to our fellow primates.
Drink, dance and feast on insanely good Tacos at the Monkey Bar.
Car need cleaning? Gorilla Eco Valet at your service.
2. Monkey years were the makings of Chamonix.
The Montenvers railway arrived in the year of the Monkey – 1908 – it was the area’s first official tourist attraction and brought tons of visitors to Chamonix, who’ve been returning ever since.
3. Your lucky colours are white, gold and blue (and this is a red year). And would you believe what colours the Chamonix coat of arms is…
Plus the scenery at this time of year is a glorious mix of pure snowy white, golden-brown rock and bright blue skies.
4. Your Lucky Numbers? 1, 7, 8, 4 & 9
Numbers which happen to crop up quite a lot in this neck of the woods…
Chamonix was discovered by Brits in 1741
The Chamonix Valley measures 17km
The Arve – the main river flowing through valley – is 107km long
In all there are 117km of pistes
And the postcode: 74400
5. Your Lucky directions are: north, northwest, west
Which makes Cham’s position in the north western Alps spot on. And with the Grand Montets pistes facing north and north west, and Le Tour looking westwards, the bulk of the pistes are all yours.
5. You are ambitious and adventurous
…and no kind of skier better suits Cham’s iconic terrain. This place is home to some of the best off piste on the planet, with the likes of the Vallee Blanche to conquer.
6. You’re also sociable and lively
Which means you’ll love the community atmosphere and buzzing après at Chambre Neuf, Vagabond and of course Monkey Bar.
7. There are plenty of lodgings to suit your personality.
Like Club Med Chamonix Mont Blanc.
- Group lessons (included in the price), chatty staff and big dining tables to suit your sociable personality.
- Evening disco and entertainment, open bar and apres ski activities to suit your lively nature.
- (Plus it’s located at 191 Avenue du Savoy which features some of your lucky numbers. Request a room on the 1st or 4th floor and hey presto!).
And oodles of apartments, if you fancy being adventurous when it comes to cooking.
7. And you like an Active Lifestyle
We’re struggling to think of anywhere else on earth where you could stay active in so many different ways, all year long.
Ski, snowboard, snowshoe, skate, speed ride, ski joer in the winter…
Hike, climb, raft, golf, canyon, skateboard, mountainbike, paraglide, horse-ride, swim in the summer.
(and that’s just for starters).
