Near the end of the stunning Ziller Valley, Mayrhofen exudes Austrian charm in a lively, cheerful atmosphere. Dating back to 1511, its architecture's charmingly old school, yet all mod-cons are present and correct. The resort's location is fantastic: Only an hour's drive from Innsbruck airport. The family-friendly nature doesn't stop with its convenient location – restaurants cater for children excellently, kids activities are abundant, and the ski schools are well known as some of the best. If you prefer a leisurely cruise down the piste, the Ahorn's your mountain, while those who like to get the heart pumping will love north facing Penken's white-knuckle steeps, moguls, powder and terrain park. Mayrhofen is highly recommended for beginners who can learn under the excellent tuition of local instructors on both the Ahorn and Penken mountains. The only two problems we had was that the Wi-Fi didn’t work in the accommodation (they knew about it, but didn’t resolve it, so we had to use the hotel Wi-Fi). And also that breakfasts were a bit poor – there wasn’t anyone there and they didn’t put much on for you. We’ve stayed at the Kramerwirt a few times and it was much better there. The dinners at the hotel over the road were perfect, the hotel is easy to reach and the buffet nights were great, much better than the meal nights. We got seated with another couple in the restaurant on the first night, and ended up getting on so well with them that we came home with new friends. Room big and spacious, clean and nice enough. The location is really good as you’re right in the centre of Mayrhofen, 5 minutes from the Penken lift and 5 minutes from everything else including the train station.

Had a very good week overall. I couldn’t fault the cleanliness of the hotel. The location is good, with the bus stop right outside (or you can walk, the train station was about a 7 minute walk away). The Spar shop is just across the road which is fab if you need anything. Some rooms were very dated and the bathrooms were less modern than expected, with 1960’s green tiles and things in need of updating/replacing in the bath/shower areas. It looks like they had refurbished some bedrooms and not others, we saw one of the rooms downstairs which had been done up and it was beautiful with a new bathroom and everything updated. When all the rooms are done like that it will be lovely! There is a chance there are only a few dated rooms like ours left, it might all be completely refurbished by the 2016/2017 season. We enjoyed the dinners over at the Rose, at first we were put in a back room which was a bit dingy, but after speaking to the waitress we moved to the conservatory which was really nice. There’s also a main dining area where some people were seated. They had live entertainment one night while you were eating, and the meals were very varied. Breakfasts had some room for improvement – they left everything on the side and it must have sat there for hours with the central heating on – meats, yoghurts etc with no refrigeration or ice to keep them cool. The orange juice was warm and could have done with some ice too. Some of the group ended up going to the Spar shop instead. We have stayed in the Kramerwirt before where the breakfasts were beautiful. Overall we enjoyed our week. We love Mayrhofen as a ski resort and although some parts of the hotel could be improved, it was very clean.
