Malcesine is an incredibly popular place to stay in August and rightfully so. With its’ warm weather in the summer months as well as a bounty of things to do, whether you want to absorb its history and culture, get active in the lake and mountains or enjoy the area at a more leisurely pace.
With its striking castle and the famous Palazzo dei Capitani, Malcesine is oozing history, making it an ideal holiday destination for culture vultures. If you visit the castle (make sure you stop off at the nearby Cento Per Cento for amazing ice cream), you’ll enjoy an excellent natural history museum as well as amazing views from the ramparts and tower, while the lakeside garden at the Palazzo is in full bloom in the summer.
Avoiding the hottest parts of the day provides the perfect excuse to get lost in Malcesine’s narrow, cobbled streets, where you’ll stumble upon characterful shops and cafes. You can also cool off in the lake with a swim at the Sopri and Paina lidos or water sports at Val di Sogno, a large pebble beach towards the south of the town. Various boat trips are available from this area as well as from Malcesine’s harbour, and a boat tour of the lake is a classy way to experience the area in the sunshine.
Don’t let the popularity of Malcesine in August put you off staying here in the summer. If the town gets busy, there’s are walks like the one through the Val di Sogno to Cassione and you’ll also find peace and quiet in the area’s cool olive groves and up on Mont Baldo, which is just a scenic cable car ride away.
