Axamer Lizum is a snow-sure ski resort located south-west of Innsbruck. Boasting a top altitude of 2340m, it’s the highest resort in the area and one of the highest in Austria. Surrounded by attractive forestry, this scenic village is fairly small, quiet and mostly traffic free with traditional Austrian architecture. The resort is conveniently positioned 25km from Innsbruck and is a short transfer from the nearest airport. It was purpose built for the Olympic Games in 1964 (and hosted the Winter Olympics again ...
Whilst it’s primarily a haven for intermediate and advanced skiers, Axamer Lizum also accommodates well for beginners with brilliant ski schools and some good quality nursery slopes at the base of the mountain. The beginner’s slopes are considered fairly challenging for those completely new to the sport, but being thrown into the deep end is an excellent way to learn and once you’ve learned to ski here, you’re likely to find other resorts a doddle. The ski area is first-rate for intermediate and advanced ...
The après ski here is suited to those who, after a long day on the slopes, want to relax with good friends, appetizing food and delicious drinks. There are six pubs in the area and two nightclubs a short bus ride away. Axamer Lizum’s close proximity to Innsbruck means that party lovers have easy access to a more lively night out - this is a fantastic way to end the holiday and enjoy the great après ski Austria has to offer! There are a number of ski huts where you can relax with a drink and enjoy some live ...

"Tidy & modern, recommended"

The hotel is really good, it was just me and my friend staying here and we really enjoyed it. It’s quite a big property spread over a few hotels and the staff are dead friendly. Inside everything is clean, tidy and quite modern and it has a swimming pool, sauna and all that as well. We just had a twin room which had everything we needed. We had food in the hotel and it was really good. It’s dead simple to get around, a five minute walk to the bus stop that takes you up the mountain and also about a five minute walk to get into the town (there isn’t loads there, just three or four pubs but they’re all nice ones). I’d definitely recommend it to anyone that likes the mountains!

"Good for what we paid, main hotel nicer"

The hotel was OK, although I was disappointed that we weren’t staying in the main hotel bit but the other bit (when you get off the bus outside the main bit, you go round the corner and that’s where we ended up staying). Our bedroom was shabby, for example the material on the chairs was worn and the bedside table was a bit dirty but the bed and bathroom were both clean. I’ve heard the main hotel was nicer, so you need to know which part you’re staying in when you book. For what we paid for the holiday however, where we stayed was OK, but I think if you paid full price you might be disappointed. It’s a 5 minute walk to the bus or you can walk to the ski lift which takes about 10-15 minutes (we did a bit of both throughout the week). Quietness wise, the hotel was fine. The food was good, we had plenty of choice, with self service salad and soup followed by a main course that you select the night before at breakfast – I was very happy with everything I ate. We also had cake etc in the afternoon when we got in from skiing. There’s a bar in the hotel besides the dining room but it’s quite dark. It would have been nice to have a lounge area where people can relax if they don’t want to drink as we ended up having to go back to our room quite early. The staff were good, we saw a lot of the owner and the waiters were very friendly. One night we came back a bit late because we’d been into Innsbruck and the staff were very flexible so we didn’t have to go hungry! The hotel also put on its own entertainment with an Irish thing on Friday and Saturday night which was good fun. The hotel is in a village called Götzens which had a bakery, a few shops and a couple of cafes where we stopped off for drinks and cakes after skiing. Götzens does have it’s own little ski area which is well linked to Axamer Lizum, but if you wanted to ski the slopes at Götzens every day you’d be bored. If you want to ski the glacier (we didn’t end up skiing it in the end as it was too cold) there’s a bus from Götzens to the plateau every Friday.
